The Greeks used their letters to make numbers. The Greeks also made up three more letters just to be used as numbers. The first eight letters in the alphabet (alpha-theta) and one of the extra letters, digamma, are the numbers 1-9.The next eight letters (iota-pi) and one of the extra letters, koppa, are multiples of ten from 10 to 90. The last eight letters (rho-omega) and one of the extra letters, sampi, are multiples of 100 from 100 to 900. For example, the number 27 would be KZ (Kappa and Zeta).
